We are a friendly orchestra of adult string players meeting weekly in Thornton Cleveleys. We welcome anyone who has taken up a string instrument or perhaps returned to playing after some time, and wants an opportunity to play with others and work towards performances.
We were
founded in 2007 by John Foster, a well known professional
violinist, teacher and conductor, who recognised the gap in provision for
opportunities for adult string players, more specifically returners or late
starters. Under John’s
guidance the orchestra has developed and flourished, undertaking many musical
challenges. However since November
2016 John Foster stepped down from
the post of Musical Director. The
orchestra members are grateful for all his hard work, inspiration and
friendship over the years.
Phoenix Strings continues to meet, now under the Musical Directorship of
Gill Hume.
Our existing members are from many backgrounds and a range of standards up to diploma. We don't audition, but if you are thinking about joining us have a chat with our Musical Director in the first instance.
The Music we play is selected by our Musical Director, and has included works by Handel, Boyce, Walton, Mussorgsky, selections from musicals, and pieces specifically written for string orchestra.
Public performance is a key focus of the orchestra and we have collaborated with brass bands, choirs, opera groups, and soloists.
